Features

  • Does pattern imprinted concrete crack?

Yes, all concrete will crack therefore, all of our imprinted concrete driveways, paths and patios have crack control joints (movement joints) which are cut into the paving so we are able to control the cracking. We also will put in French drains where necessary to help with any more movement. The mix of concrete that we use is also a factor that protects the driveway against cracking and we use a special formulation of fine fibres and air entrainment in all our installations.

  • Is the surface slippery?

The surface of any decorative concrete can be slippy if it has not been sealed correctly. We use a high percentage acrylic sealant mixed with xylene so the sealant attaches it self properly to the concrete. We also use a anti slip gripping material in all our sealed paving.

  • How often does the concrete paving need to be sealed?

Normally if it has been sealed correctly it should last 3 to 5 years depending on how much use the paving has and also how much salt has been applied to the surface by traffic. We recommend that you should reseal your paving every 5 years (by a professional driveway contractor) to keep it looking like new. We have recently sealed a driveway which was installed over 20 years ago and it's looks like it was laid yesterday.

  • Is a pattern imprinted concrete driveway expensive?

Most driveways cost around the same price, block paving, tarmac, pattern imprinted concrete are usually around the same price because the same sub base is normally required. Remember the majority of the cost of a driveway or patio is the excavation and the labour of installing the paved area, not what you see on the surface.

  • How thick does the concrete need to be laid?

This depends on what it is going to be used for. Typically, for foot traffic only, you will only require 75 mm. A driveway for light traffic will need 100mm, and for heavy vehicle use, there would need to be 150 mm of a least a c30 concrete mix.

  • Is pattern imprinted concrete weed free?

It is Virtually weed free. There are only crack controll joints in the paving and weeds do tend to start to grow in them over time. There are no other joints like there are in block paving (between the bricks), or precast concrete paving slabs and natural stone. The sealant also protects the paving but you will always get moss, algae and lichens growing if you don't keep your paving clean.

  • Can paving contractors cut corners when installing imprinted concrete?

Yes and unfortunately some company's do ...firstly they can cut corners as early as the preparation stage by using insufficient hard core or the wrong hardcore to the base. This will lead to the concrete heaving or cracking.

Secondly the mix of concrete is a high and costly specification, so once again the wrong concrete mixes can be used. Also, the CSH (colour surface hardeners) which are used on the surface of the concrete can be applied too thinly. Finally, the sealant which is applied to the surface of the concrete can be cheap and be applied thinly. Remember a cheap job is never the right job!
